Suggest Songs We Should Play

As you probably know, the Norscot gig at Hallowe’en was our last gig of 2005. Denis will shortly be heading off to Morocco for a five week holiday and then, when he returns, we’re into Christmas and New Year (never a good time to do anything too strenuous).

While Denis is lazing about in the sun, the rest of the band will be slaving away on a lot of new material. We have a lot of new stuff lined up already but we’d like to hear from you about the songs you’d like us to play.

Use the ‘comment’ feature below to leave your ideas.

Note: there might be a prize for the best idea but unless you suggest a song you’ll never know.

  1. Am I allowed to suggest ones? How about “Wooly Bully” by Sam the Sham & the Pharoes?

  2. Adam, you can certainly suggest songs here. (Even although you are in the band!) I have to confess that I have no idea what “Wooly Bully” by Sam the Sham & the Pharoes sounds like. Is it even a real song? If it is real, I'm keen to at least consider it.

  3. They not from Fetler??

  4. How’s aboot a self penned effort you could call ‘Raikin’ up da hoose’?

    Some suggested lyrics:-

Am hoovird Butt, an am hoovird Ben, an whan am feenished al start again? Gee me my Dyson!

All the above to an unmistakable Big Pockets ‘groove’ with optional chicken strut dance moves.

  5. Howdy Mr Vinyl,

    Sounds like an excellent scheme.

How about making a special guest appearance at a future Big Pockets’ gig to unleash ‘Raikin’ Up Da Hoose’ to the Shetland public?

The only condition is that Chicken Strut dance moves are compulsory!

  6. It would be an honour to make a guest appearance with The Big Pockets but I wouldn’t want to cramp your style!

  7. Welcome back Mr Vinyl,

I’ll pencil in your guest appearance for early 2006.

We might even learn a Vinyls number or two just for the occasion.

And there is no need to worry about cramping our style – I wasn’t even aware that we had any style for you to cramp!

    Cheers

  8. How about the Drewington peas?

  9. Nicol,

I was just sitting here having a cup of coffee and realised that I was humming a tune in my head. Turned oot to be ‘I wanted a Chipsteak!’

Here’s another couple of ideas for new material for you, not that any of you need the inspiration of course!:-

    1. Hae you ony Squad Huts or will we joost mak some gansies instead?
    2. Da pit hill blues – including mandatory references to floaters in the pepsi bottle, blunt tuskers, auld ‘spret’ breeks, ‘maxi’ rabbits and peat moots in your een!

    Cheers

  10. Welcome back Mr Vinyl,

I hope you will be pleased to know that we are already working on a song entitled ‘The Decline of the Mechanised Peat Industry’.

(More accurately, I’ve been working on the song for about a year and have not really made a huge amount of progress).

Anyway, we will certainly consider rattling up something for ‘Pit Hill Blues’ too.

Perhaps we will expand this into an ambitious two-disc concept album focussing on the midgie-infested hell that is the pit hill.

Just an idea. I’m pretty sure the rest of the band will say no.

    Cheers again

  11. Guten Tag JBP’s.

I have a suggestion for a song you should play. ‘Sugar Bee’ by Canned Heat. It seems simple enough, so you might be able to make a half decent stab at it.

Also ‘Eastbound and Down by Jerry Reed’ All time classic.

    Cheers

  12. Or alternatively you could cover the infamous Sufjan Stevens with his marvellous:

‘To the Workers of the Rockford River Valley Region, I have an Idea Concerning Your Predicament, and it involves shoe string, a lavender garland, and twelve strong women’

Sounds like a winner to me

  13. Or if all else fails there is the well known country songs:
    – My Head Hurts, My Feet Stink, And I Don’t Love You

    or
    – You’re The Reason Our Kids Are So Ugly

    Sorry

  14. Hey Pockets! Good sounds you have. Cool website. I belive Wooly Bully (the song) is possibly used in the motion picture “Full Metal Jacket” but I may be mistaken. T’is indeed a good one.

  15. I am a big fan of the peat hill idea but how about the pelagic fishing industry as a source of inspiration. You could have a blues tune with the title “All my fish are black but I’ve nowhere to land them”

  16. Excellent site guys, haven’t heard you live, but hopefully will some time. Why don’t you base a song around boy racers that go about lerwick – in shetland style “baby du can drive my car”

  17. Greetings Messrs Nickerson, Mouat and Reid.

I hope you are all keeping well.

Thank you for your suggestions. Hopefully we’ll get around to writing some new stuff soon.

For anyone who didn’t know, Stuart was an orginal member of Jamieson’s Big Pockets. In a bold move, he turned his back on fame and opted out of the paparazzi hell that me and the other remaining members have to put up with every day.

Stuart plans to eventually make a living off the back of being the enigmatic and misterious ‘missing Pocket’.

    Wise move Mr. N.

    Cheers

  18. Cheers for the Fatalists link and article, Pockets.

Yes, life as the mysterious and “Pete Best or fifth Pocket” will probably involve a lucrative warts and all tell all biography of early Pockets debauchery.

    Entitled “The North Star years”.
